  • Austenitic stainless steel(ASTM 316/316L, 321,304/304L,)
  • Ferritic stainless steel(UNS S41003)
  • High-alloy austenitic stainless steel(‘904L’, 253 MA*)
  • Duplex stainless steel(UNS S32101, S32304, S31803/32205, S32750)

Making of stainless Steel

  • Raw Materials – Raw materials used are: stainless steel scrap, iron, nickel and chromium.
  • Reheating – The stainless steel slabs are then reheated due to which a rusty scale (oxide) is accumulated on the surface. This scale is removed from the surface by High pressure water jets in a process called as Decaling
  • Quality Testing – There is quality testing at each stage of production, where a sample is taken from the product, and sent to labs for physical and chemical examination. Each gram of our stainless steel is planned to perfection.

There are many types of stainless steel products available in the market, of which stainless steel sheets are one. However, since there is not much information available on the products and more on stainless steel itself, a lot of business owners find it difficult to understand the usability of different types of stainless steel products.

As we would be focusing on stainless steel plates in our blog today, we would be revealing a few very popular uses of the product. It has high resistance to corrosion and oxidation and thus is popular among many industries. Apart from the physical factors, the chemical properties of the product govern the usability of the product. Stainless steel is made with a combination of different types of metals and hence has various grades where each of them has unique usability. As per your industry’s unique needs, you must search for a stainless steel sheets manufacturing company based on the quantity you require.

Reasons to use stainless steel sheets

One question that haunts many industries is that of finding the right product. Stainless steel comes in many qualities, shapes, and sizes. It is very imperative that you go with the one that meets your unique needs. Every industry has a different set of challenges; for example, a chemical industry would require products that can handle corrosion from chemicals; however, an aeronautical industry would need something robust, durable, and abrasion-proof. This small example would help you understand the gravity of choosing the right product. A good product allows you to reduce maintenance and operational costs, and it gives you a major benefit when you are running a business.

Coming back to stainless steel sheets, industries choose it because it is easy to form. It is sleek, shiny, and lightweight. More importantly, these factors don’t affect the durability of the material. It is a malleable product that doesn’t compromise strength, and that makes it very ideal to use in various things.

There are many plate grades available on the market, and you can rest assured of the strength and corrosion resistance. It has many applications.

Types and grades of Stainless steel sheets

There are different grades available on the market. They are classified into numbers and numbers with alphabets in combinations. It depends on which industry uses it and where it is applied to choose the right grade of stainless steel sheet.

In the grade name, you would encounter numbers written with H and L; they refer to the low and high carbon content in the stainless steel sheets. You can also understand the significance of these grades from the stainless steel stockist.

Stainless steel sheets with no letter in their grade

There are some products that don’t have H and L in their name; these are called straight grades. Straight-grade products have .08% carbon in them. There is no strict requirement stating these metals much have a minimum amount of carbon in them. Here are some common applications mentioned of the stainless steel sheets.

Common applications

304 – The stainless steel sheet variations available in 304, 304H, and 304L are part of the 300 series in particular. They are very compatible with stainless steel grade for the food and beverage industry, as they keep the contamination at bay. They have 18% chromium and 8% nickel in them.

316 – Another grade from the 300 series, they are often used in environmental and marine applications due to their high resistivity to saltwater. It has 16- 18 % chromium and about 11- 14% nickel.

410 – It is heat-treatable steel and can be used for making surgical instruments and strainers.

Jindal Stainless R&D team had recently interacted with one of the premium customers to understand the key basic requirement of enhanced machinability of 316 grade in pulp & paper component manufacturing and catered with SS 316F ( Sulphur 0.2%) where in the customer’s key requirement was of longer tool life with higher cutting speeds. The customer was earlier importing the entire component for paper and pulp industry.

After sustained R&D efforts, we are proud to have indigenously developed and manufactured grade 316F stainless steel in sheet and plate form.

Grade 316F, commonly termed as free-machining austenitic stainless steel, contains high sulphur (0.2%S) as an alloying element. This grade also contains Mo for improved pitting corrosion. Sulphur along with manganese forms the manganese sulphide (MnS) compound, which causes chip-off more readily while machining.

316F finds its application where material with high machinability is required. Wear and tear of tools is almost 41% lower in comparison to SS 316L when compared with SS 316F.

Third-generation ferritic stainless steel for automotive.

In order to fulfil various evolving needs of our customers and ensure optimum quality products in the automotive sector, the research and development team at Jindal Stainless has developed grade 430J1L niobium stabilized ferritic stainless steel. This specialized grade consists of high proportions of Chromium (>19%) and some amount of copper. Automotive components such as manifold, catalytic converter shell, and EGR (Exhaust gas recirculation) are the primary components being produced using this stainless steel. This grade is also used in the automotive muffler where exhaust gas condensate causes severe corrosion.

430J1L has good formability for shape forming and drawing of automotive components. Additionally, it has excellent corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength in a similar environment of exhaust gases. The elevated temperature (e.g. 700°C) strength of 430J1L is three times higher than type 409L and 1.5 times higher than type 439.

Jindal Stainless, boasts of a state-of-the-art grinding and polishing line which is capable of manufacturing multiple special finishes to cater to the ever-increasing demand in lifts & elevators, and metro & construction segments. The grinding line is useful in the following ways:

1. Wet grinding mechanism ensures uniform grinding across and along the length of the coil

2. Combination of 4 grinding headers imparts uniformity of texture

3. Degreasing and strip drying section removes any residues on the surface

4. The oil-resistant, heavy-duty contact rolls and squeeze rolls ensure proper belt-to–surface contact during the grinding process which facilitates the maintenance of proper flatness of the surface, thereby resulting in uniform grinding.

Jindal Stainless bagged the Industry Excellence Award from Sugar Technologist’s Association of India (STAI).
